2027 Medicare Open Enrollment: Review Your Coverage and Make Sure Your Plan Still Fits

Medicare Annual Enrollment is October 15 through December 7, 2026.

Each fall, Medicare beneficiaries have an opportunity to review their coverage and make changes for the upcoming year. Changes made during Medicare Annual Enrollment generally take effect January 1, 2027. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Even if you are happy with your current coverage, I encourage you to take a few minutes to review it.

Why? Because Medicare Advantage and Part D plans can change from year to year, including premiums, prescription coverage, costs, provider networks, pharmacy networks, and other plan details. CMS specifically recommends reviewing the Annual Notice of Change and comparing your coverage for the upcoming year. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

At LT Insurance Services, my goal is to help make that process easier to understand.

What Can You Do During Medicare Annual Enrollment?

From October 15 through December 7, Medicare beneficiaries may be able to:

  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

  • Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.

  • Leave a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.

  • Join, change, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, subject to Medicare's enrollment rules. Medicare

You don't necessarily need to change plans every year. Sometimes, after reviewing everything, keeping your existing coverage may still meet your needs.

The important thing is to review before the December 7 deadline rather than assuming your 2027 coverage will be identical to 2026.

Before You Compare 2027 Plans, Gather These Items

Having your information ready makes comparing plans much easier.

For a Medicare Advantage plan, have your:

✓ Doctors and specialists
✓ Prescription medications, including dosage and frequency
✓ Preferred pharmacy
✓ Preferred hospitals or medical groups
✓ Current Medicare and insurance cards
✓ Any important healthcare needs or planned procedures for 2027

For a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan, your medication list and preferred pharmacy are especially important.

A plan with the lowest monthly premium is not automatically the lowest-cost option for everyone. Looking at prescription costs, deductibles, copays, pharmacies and your anticipated healthcare use can provide a more complete picture.

A Simpler Way to Compare and Enroll in a Medicare Plan

I have a dedicated Medicare quote and enrollment tool that allows you to review available plans from home.

Start here:

COMPARE 2027 MEDICARE PLAN OPTIONS →

When you open the tool, you'll begin by entering your ZIP code so the system can identify the plans available in your county.

You can then enter your preferences, including:

Your doctors — search by name and make sure you have the correct location.

Your prescriptions — enter your medications so you can review estimated drug costs.

Your pharmacy — pharmacy selection can affect what you pay for your prescriptions.

Once that information has been entered, you can compare available options and review plan details.

Here's How to Use My Medicare Enrollment Tool

How to Enroll in a New Part D Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan.

A few important tips when comparing:

Don't look at the premium alone.

Consider the estimated total cost, prescription drug coverage, pharmacy costs and — when applicable — whether the doctors and healthcare providers you want to use participate in the plan.

When you're considering a plan, click “View Details” and review the available plan documents, including the plan's Summary of Benefits and other coverage information.

Ready to Enroll?

Once you have decided on the plan you want:

  1. Add the plan to your cart.

  2. Follow the prompts and enter the requested personal and Medicare information.

  3. When applicable, select the appropriate enrollment-period reason. During the October 15–December 7 Annual Enrollment Period, this is the Medicare Annual/Open Enrollment period.

  4. Carefully review the information you entered.

  5. Complete and submit your enrollment.

After your enrollment is submitted, you should receive a confirmation. I will also follow up when I receive notification through my enrollment platform.

For an enrollment submitted during Medicare Annual Enrollment for January coverage, the new plan generally takes effect January 1, 2027, provided the plan receives the enrollment request by December 7. Medicare
